The process-oriented drawings within the Traces of Spun series explore peace within the unpredictable. The pieces are created with my specialized spindle-as-drawing-tool. As a woolen line is drawn from a mass of fiber, the spindle's whirling dance is recorded as a graphite drawing on paper. Layer upon wandering layer of line marks the passage of time as the yarn above grows inch by inch, until the drawing develops into a mass mirroring the handful of wool I began with. The action of drawing out a single thread takes place between the soft chaos of the fiber and the humming chaos of the drawing. Here I am able to exert control in the same moment I relinquish it. This space allows for a buzzing mind to find quietude and seek meaning as time stretches out with the length of the thread. 22”x30”
